Program Pause

Until we are able to secure additional funding, we have temporarily paused our housing match and rental assistance programs. Along with a team of volunteers, grants, and donations, we have been able to provide many months of housing for many displaced families, but until we obtain more funds we are unable to assist additional families.

If you would like to support the continued impact of this program, please donate, volunteer, or offer a home.

Help Us Match Displaced Neighbors to Temporary Homes

So many of our neighbors have lost their homes and possessions. While FEMA vouchers have limited, short-term use, many families are looking for mid- and long-term housing to have some sense of normalcy and stability as they put the pieces of their lives back together.

If you are a displaced family, or manage properties, please read on. If neither of these applies to you but you would still like to support, donate money to this housing fund or volunteer your time.

I Am Looking for a Home

We know it’s rough right now and everything feels overwhelming. Maybe you lost your home due to flooding, mold, or eviction. Being in stable housing as you navigate the challenges will help.

Whether you are looking for something for one week or one year, your budget is $0 or $2,000, we will do our best to find a match for you and your family.

We tried to make the form short, but if you’d rather talk it out call Kit at 828-380-4229.

I Have a Home to Offer

Maybe you –

  • are a short-term rental operator who knows that tourism will be slow for months
  • were going to sell your house but now prefer to wait for a stronger market
  • had a renter who evacuated or relocated

Whatever your story, we can preserve our community by banding together and giving where we can.

Listing your property does not obligate you to anything – it simply helps us know what inventory may be available so we can contact you with relevant needs only.

FEMA has several approaches to housing:

Hotel Vouchers

Most everyone has been receiving subsidized hotel stays. After you submit your FEMA application, you will get an email that says you qualify for the lodging program and can stay at hotels on this website – femaemergencyhotels.com. The number of rooms and length of stay are different for each application.

Displacement Assistance

This is money awarded under the category ‘Miscellaneous Needs’. It is to pay for short-term lodging while your home is being repaired or while you’re looking for new housing. It is automatically awarded after the FEMA inspector visits your home.

Direct Lease and Multifamily Lease and Repair (MLR)

These are part of FEMA’s Direct Temporary Housing Assistance program. Basically, they will match you with a landlord in their database, and they pay the bill. To qualify you must be a homeowner or renter who suffered severe damages to your home. As with the other assistance, they will reach out to you if your application indicates you qualify. FEMA is currently building out their portfolio of landlords with rental properties. Learn more here.

Transportable Temporary Housing Units (TTHUs)

FEMA is dropping trailers on land to provide more housing supply. Again, they will reach out to you with this option. Learn more here.
